Case Studies
I have helped authors address a variety of concerns, including but not limited to:
pacing that’s too slow or too fast
incomplete character arcs
plot holes
themes, foreshadowing, world building, and more.
Here are a few case studies that illustrate the writing roadblocks and the steps I took to help my clients push through them:
Case Study 1:
A fantasy author came to me with a beautifully built, richly imagined world, but her beta readers struggled to connect with the characters and questioned some of their choices. During the developmental edit, I worked with the author to develop clear backstories and motivations for each character, including key side characters. By clarifying both internal and external motivations, the characters’ decisions became more grounded and emotionally coherent. This helped beta readers better understand and relate to the cast without being pulled out of the story. As a result, readers stayed immersed in the narrative and offered much more positive feedback—and the author was delighted with the outcome.
Case Study 2:
A romance author came to me struggling to capture the slow-burn dynamic she envisioned for her story. The characters’ motivations felt unclear, which weakened the emotional progression of the relationship.
Through developmental editing, I helped her clarify each character’s internal drivers and identify the key romance beats her story needed. By isolating moments of tension, restraint, and gradual intimacy, we strengthened the arc and pacing of the romance. The result was a clearer, more emotionally satisfying slow burn and a confident path forward for revision.
Case Study 3:
A fantasy author came to me with an ambitious, intricately layered world, but several major plot holes were starting to undermine the story. Through developmental editing, I helped her identify where the world building logic broke down and isolate the specific plot holes causing confusion. Together, we explored possible solutions that respected the rules of her world and the heart of her story. The author then adapted those ideas in ways that felt authentic to her vision. The result was a cohesive, compelling world that fully supported a strong and satisfying narrative.
